Garden update
Flowers
We're making a more conscious effort this year to plant a more diverse range of plants, focusing on a more permaculture approach with emphasis on non-edibles, flowers and beneficial plants. So not only have we planted a ton more herbs but we have also planted a range of marigolds, hostas and sweet peas, they are great for the pollinators, aesthetically pleasing, good companion plants and also get good trap crops. Find out more about marigolds and how to grow them here.
Seeds
As you're fully aware by now we absolutely love our soil blocker. We use it for almost everything and would not recommend anything else. We do know the limitations of this, your soil needs to be fine enough to block, wet enough to compact and your seeds need to be small enough to fit! We wouldn't recommend this for runner beans etc. But for most other crop this is brilliant, it saves on plastic, it's easier than pots and means your crop won't get transplant shock.
This week we have planted:
- Broad beans
- Runner beans
- Climbing french beans
- Beetroot
- Carrots
- Parsnip
- Tomatoes
- Peppers
- Leeks
- Lettuces
- Radish
- Spring onions
- Cucumber
- Melon
- Broccoli
Potatoes
Of course, we are growing potatoes again this year! We have gone for planting them in sacks rather than in the ground as we are working very hard to follow no dig principles, and found that last year when we topped with straw / mulch rather than soil to allow for no dig harvesting that they were mainly eaten by pests; which is not what anyone wants! So this year we have gone for sack methods, this will allow us to heap to potatoes, protect them from pests and ensure that we can follow our no dig methods and not disturb he soil. We will reuse the compost once the potatoes have been harvested. Nothing is wasted. You can find out more about potatoes and how to grow them here.
Another thing we forgot to do was label up our varieties, as like many gardeners we had the good intention of remembering what we planted where. This didn't work. So this year we are using posts for all our crop, so we don't forget again.
